The Herzog family has been making wine for a long time. They trace their winemaking origins back to Philip Herzog, who made wine in Slovakia for the Austro-Hungarian court more than a century ago. Philip’s wines were so appreciated by Emperor Franz-Josef, that the emperor made Philip a baron. The Baron Herzog wines—a line of premium yet moderately priced California varietals—are named to commemorate the honor.

To garnish the table and plenish the cups of prominent personalities and distinguished visitors to the estate - winemaking took place in the cellars of Noble Oaks between 1930's. On an oak covered hill in the Ojai Valley, the property - with its rambling Spanish Colonial Revival – Andalusian Farmhouse home, was a sacred place of the Chumash people. The location and orientation of the house was chosen to preserve and protect an ancient Chumash molcajete - indigenous to the property. This large stone is located in the courtyard near the front entrance of the home which was built in 1928. Noble Oaks Vineyard was established in 2000 with a 1 acre planting of Malbec. In 2009, Tannat - another masculine robust red, was grafted to 130 vines.

In early 2005 Faye decided I that I needed another job as my time wasn’t being completely used all 24 hours of the day – between my full time day job and working our 40 acre avocado & lemon ranch. So, during and shortly after a trip to the Russian River area we made the decision to turn our passion for wine making into a commercial endeavor. The agreement was … I'd make it, she’d sell it. Since we had always called our ranch "Rancho Ventavo" as we are a avocado and lemon ranch located on Ventavo Drive, we thought it only fitting to call our winery "Rancho Ventavo Cellars".
