The stylistic goal of angelica cellars is to produce outstanding wines with honest varietal characteristics that proudly express their place of origin. Sourcing grapes from the esteemed (and sustainably farmed) White Hawk Vineyard in the Los Alamos Valley in Santa Barbara makes our job easy. The cool climate less than a marathon’s run from the Pacific creates a perfect home for even-ripening grapes with higher natural acidity. The infernally porous sandy soils push the roots of the vineyard to dig down deep for their water and, consequently, pull up incredible minerality and complexity in flavor. Low yields, a minimal cold-soak, and native fermentation encourage the wine to be what it was meant to be with little intervention.

Tour the Cucamonga Valley’s last (at one time there were over 60) remaining Prohibition Era winery still operating at its original location by its founding family. Wine grapes were planted in the Cucamonga valley by European immigrants, and by the 1930′s vineyards stretched from the Santa Ana River to the San Gabriel Mountains, growing lush in the alluvail fan of deep sandy soil deposited by rivers that flowed down mountain canyons and onto the Cucamonga Valley floor. The average age of the vineyards in the Valley is 90 years, producing much sought after “old vine” wine grapes.

All grapes are grown within selected blocks of the Laetitia Vineyard, situated within the Arroyo Grande Valley appellation. Cool maritime breezes and coastal morning fog contribute to a long growing season in one of California’s coolest wine grape growing regions. The vineyards are planted on a hilly terrain characterized by diverse microclimates and varied soil types. Of the 432 producing acres of pinot noir, a few distinctive parcels have been chosen to make the block-specific Malvolio wines.
