Wow what an inviting tasting room. I felt as though I had mistakenly walked into someone's living room. It is beautiful and cozy comfortable. Very upscale but not stuffy. The staff was incredibly wonderful and knowledgable of wine in general and guided me through the tasting with tidbits of information on the family, the vineyards and the tie into all the movie posters on the walls from all the movies Mr. Silvestri has written and composed. Quite an artistic wonder with the artistic driven musical passion combined with wnderful production of all his full bodied wines. A tasting room not to be missed.

THE SMITH & HOOK STORY It was in the mid-1970’s and on two neighboring ranches-turned-vineyards in Monterey County that Nicolaus (“Nicky”) Hahn and his wife Gaby first established Hahn Winery and Smith & Hook wines. The Smith Ranch had been horse ranch, while the Hook Ranch had raised cattle for generations; their prime location provided a perfect setting for growing premium varietal fruit. Smith & Hook Winery released its first vintage of Cabernet Sauvignon to high acclaim in 1980.

Sonnet is the creation of Tony Craig, begun during his tenure as winemaker for David Bruce Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. Originally a Shakespearean actor from the English town of Newcastle, Tony led the Pinot Noir vineyard designation program at David Bruce for twelve years. As acclaim and recognition for the Bruce Pinot Noir grew, Tony began producing wines for himself as well. Many phone calls, much paperwork, and a few years later, Sonnet wines have quickly become some of the most sought after Pinot Noir in California.

Szalay Winery is one of the most recent boutique wineries in the Santa Lucia Mountain range of Carmel Valley. In the summer of 2003 Jozsef and Bette Kovacs purchased 13 acres of land. Jozsef and Bette with their sons Jacob and Jesse began planting and building the winery. Located sixteen miles into the valley from the Big Sur coastline, we experience hot summer days with ocean influenced breezes. Bud break on average is two weeks earlier than most California growing regions, giving us a longer growing season. At 1100 foot elevation, the south facing slope , with its sandy loam soil and sandstone base, is prime for growing exceptional reds.

Great little find! We were looking for a winery to go to in Monterey, when we found this one. We thought we would be going to an actual winery (vineyard), and were surprised when we ended up in a shopping center along a main road. However, don't let that discount their credibility. They still offer great wines and tastings are only $5 (for all of their wines), unless you buy a bottle valued at $15+, then the tastings are free. All of us ended up walking out with 2 bottles each. We all really enjoyed the Chardonnay, hands down, and then we each had a different opinion about our favorite red. Additionally, Ventana has a great patio if you want to take your tastings outside or have a picnic.

A hidden gem!! This place is very small and it's easy to miss if you're not really looking for it. The woman helping us was very friendly and attentive. She was very knowledgeable about the wines. She offered some great suggestions. I loved everything I tried but I really loved their Grenache and Syrah.  I was very impressed with their house wines as well. I don't usually drink white wine but their house white is one to try. I'm so glad I found this little place and I can't wait to go back! Open:

Rexford Winery handcrafts wines in small lots using grapes from select local vineyards. Their focus on single-vineyard Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Merlot, and other premium varieties. Rexford wines accurately reflect the varietal characteristics of the grapes and the unique microclimates and soils of the vineyards from which they come. Visitors are welcome at the winery located on the west side of Santa Cruz. The winery is open for tasting and sales Friday, Saturday, and Sunday and by appointment. NOTE: Rexford Winery is the new name for Hillcrest Terrace Winery. Rexford is a very small-scale operation that offers high quality wines. Sauvignon Blanc ($19), a Pinot Noir from Monterey ($29) and a Cab Sauv from Carmel Valley ($32). All were delicious and well made. We chatted with the winemaker. He teaches astro-physics at UCSC and decided to break into the commercial wine business after making some good homemade batches. He was knowledgeable and friendly.
