Do you have a passion for wines that reflect more of a Bordeaux style – smooth, well-structured wines that beautifully compliment food? Wines where the micro-climates of the region play a more predominant role in the end result? A wine that reveals deep berry flavors resulting from the perfect balance between soils and fruit? Are you looking to add a unique variation to your Cabernet Sauvignon choices?

Bill Galarneau of Adams Point Winery did not plan to re-invent fruit wine, but his innovative approach to winemaking has resulted in a line of Tropical Fruit and Dessert wines that has re-kindled the fruit wine industry. Like most home winemakers, Bill started making wine in the garage of his Adams Point home in Oakland, CA. When a neighbor asked if he could use some Persimmons from a backyard tree, he jumped at the chance to try something new. He was awarded a Best of Class gold Medal for his persimmon wine. This was followed by a chance purchase of mangoes and papaya at an outdoor market. The resulting Mango/Papaya blend became another Best of Class gold medal. A judge at the California State Fair described it as "A party in every glass." Now Bill was facing a new challenge. He had wine filling the garage, basement and every nook and cranny of his crawl space. He needed to get larger or smaller. He decided to get larger and opened his small winery in nearby Berkeley, CA.

Adastra is an organic winery with a great history, and Chris is happy to walk you through it. He'll introduce you to the property -- which he and his wife live off of -- and the business as well. The property is wonderful, and you can tell a lot of love has built the place up. He'll share with you the old barn and his herb garden. You'll become familiar with the origins of the name and finally, with the wines themselves while sitting around his dining room table. The reds are excellent, absolutely top-notch. In our trip, my wife and I only joined two wine clubs, and Adastra is one of them. The tasting and tour can be expensive, $25 per person but that fee is waived if you join the wine club. Honestly, even if you don't join the club, it's worth the fee for the experience.

They have a decent sized lounge area with a fireplace (yay!) and snacks. They are by some pathways, and when we were there they were running schemes to get the dog-walkers into the tasting room. I think it's a great idea. Grab a glass (or two) of wine - walk your dog to walk it off and drive home!Alderbrook winery is a must stop heading to headsburg! The site is amazing wine is fantastic! And they have fantastic cooking items using the wine! The Zinfandel balsamic is insane on caprese! Must get! Staff is fantastic and Jamie does a great job educating and amusing!
