Boyle MacDonald Wines began when husband and wife team, Craig MacDonald and Kate Boyle MacDonald, planted their family estate Napa Valley Vineyard to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The portfolio of offerings grew as Kate and Craig pursued personally farming and sourcing from additional Sierra Foothills vineyards. The portfolio includes a diverse selection of Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, as well as Sierra Foothill Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Sangiovese and Montepulciano. In addition to varietal bottlings and lovely Red Blends, Boyle MacDonald has become well known for producing Provence-style Dry Rosés and also for producing interesting and rare white wines from red varietals. The Winemaker
Winemaker Kate Boyle MacDonald has over twenty years of experience in the cellar. Kayte started as a apprentice/cellar hand in 1999. Serving as winemaker for a few wineries, today Kate is a now seasoned Winemaker. Kate’s talents quickly been acknowledged by her peers and allowed to thrive in Calaveras County. While she personally planted and tends the family estate vineyard in Napa Valley, her winemaking is rooted in California's Foothills of the Sierras. Having grown up in Germany, France, and all over the US, Kate uses the incredible California new world fruit, to create wines in the traditional old world style, exhibiting elegance, finesse and balance.
Francis Johnson and his wife Kristina recently became the proud new owners of a stunning 25-acre estate in the Sierra Foothills, having purchased this slice of paradise on January 5, 2024. Along with the breathtaking property, they inherited an esteemed line of Rhone wines recognized for their exceptional quality.
Founded in 2001 by Ron Pieretti and Wendy Sandra, Prospect 772 has long been dedicated to producing some of the finest Rhone wines available. As the new stewards of this winery, Francis and Kristina are committed to honoring the legacy established by Ron and Wendy, employing their tried-and-true winemaking techniques to ensure the continued excellence of the wines.
They will carry on the tradition by producing all the legacy wines of Prospect 772, including the beloved Black Tie Charlie. In addition to these established favorites, they plan to introduce two new varietals during their first year, starting with Tatum's Grace, a delightful white wine that will be released in April 2024.
Wine lovers and enthusiasts are warmly invited to stop by and enjoy a glass of wine with Francis and Kristina. They look forward to many years of winemaking and building friendships in the vibrant wine community.
During the late 1800s Brice Station was a popular stage stop on the way to Calaveras Big Trees. In 1993 the first vines were planted at Brice Station on the family ranch by Stuart Mast, a fifth generation California farmer and Dolores Quyle Mast. Guided by sustainable agricultural methods, the highest vineyard in the Sierra Nevada thrives in the mountain air and sunshine at an altitude of 3,300 ft. visit to the ranch today finds a tribute to the creativity of the Quyle family, featuring the rustic Brice Station Vintners tasting room, the Quyle pottery shop, the carefully tended Dolores Quyle Mast vineyards, and an assortment of sheep, geese, horses, and llamas. If you look around you will also discover several antique printing presses, as well as a blacksmith shop where Paul Quyle teaches one Saturday a month.
The first Stevenot’s came to the area during the great Gold Rush of the mid 1800’s. During that time vineyards began cropping up throughout the region as miners from France, Germany, and Italy were creating a demand for wine on an unprecedented scale. At one time the Sierra Foothills rivaled the areas of Napa and Sonoma combined in vineyard acreage with over 100 wineries established. Although the industry eventually declined with the advent of prohibition, it wasn’t long before a 5th generation member of the Stevenot family took up where his family had left off and established the winery in the late 1970s. Recognized as one of the pioneers of the rebirth of wine production in the Sierra Foothills, Stevenot Winery quickly secured its reputation for producing world-class wines and for its innovative and award-winning style.

Hatcher Winery was founded in 2002 by owner/winemaker Matthew Hatcher. His skills as a winemaker have put this winery on the map and the tasting room in Murphys is a very popular stop for wine lovers in the Sierra Foothills. Matthew Hatcher is the owner and winemaker, and his wine making talents have put Hatcher on the don't miss list of Foothill wineries.

The vineyard of Chatom Vineyards is nestled in the breathtaking Esmeralda Valley of the Sierra Foothills in Calaveras County. The valley was originally planted with low-field crops, fruits, and nut trees. When Gay Callan, owner and native San Franciscan, purchased the property in 1980, her vision was to plant a vineyard. Her first varietals were planted in 1981, totaling 21 acres of Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. Today, the vineyard boasts 13 varietals planted on 65 acres, including Chardonnay, Semillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah, Sangiovese and 5 Portuguese varietals. Twisted Oak Winery
Twisted Oak Winery specializes in crafting unique wines from varietals such as Tempranillo, Grenache, Mourvèdre, Viognier, and more. Black Sheep Winery opened in 1984, featuring small releases of wine handcrafted from high-quality grapes grown in Calaveras, and Amador Counties. Black Sheep Winery produces about 2,500 cases of wine per year, specializing in Zinfandels, but also producing Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc, and a second label called True Frogs Lily Pad Wines. This wine pays homage to jumping frog heritage here in Calaveras County!
