homas' fondest early memories are of the Castillou Ranch and watching, then ultimately joining, the miracle of turning grapes into a magical libation--WINE. Today, Thomas is carrying on the family's agricultural and winemaking traditions in scenic Humboldt County. He has planted nearly 30 acres of European-style wine grapes in a 280° bend of the south fork of the Eel River in historic Myers Flat.

River Star Vineyards consist of approximately 80 acres, family owned and operated. River Star is dedicated and committed to providing top wineries throughout California that purchase their superlative fruit. In the late 1990’s, the decision was made to transform the River Star facility and begin producing wines in addition to growing their top-quality vineyards. The 2001 Syrah was their debut red. Additional production of Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon varietals completes the portfolio of initial offerings for the River Star family of wines. At River Star not only realize that it takes great fruit to make great wine, they grow those winegrapes themselves.

RN Estate Vineyard

grape cluster

High on the west ridge of the Estrella River valley, the hilltop estate offers a breathtaking view and a unique terroir. Specializing in estate-grown red Bordeaux varietals and Pinot Noir sourced from the renowned vineyards of Santa Rita Hills, the estate is dedicated to crafting wines that embody balance, finesse, and elegance.

Roger Nicolas, a native of Brittany, France, and a former restaurateur, has channeled his passion and energy into grape growing. In 2003, he crafted his first vintage, and since then, he has been producing these sought-after wines with unwavering commitment and artistry.

Road 31 Wines

Three vineyard blocks contributed to this wine. From the Nord Vineyard, at the southern mouth of the Napa River where the water spills into the San Pablo/San Francisco Bay, comes the prettiness of clone 115. Stanly Ranch, in Carneros just west across the Napa River from Nord, provided two very different blocks. The structure of clones 114 comes from block 17, which is higher on the hillside, and the prettiness of clone 777 comes from block 14, which is tucked down away from the wind.

ROAR Wines

Gary and Rosella Franscioni founded ROAR Wines with the conviction that Pinot Noir had a bright future in the Santa Lucia Highlands, coupled with the aspiration that their farming expertise would translate into exceptional grapes and wines. In 1996, they planted Rosella’s Vineyard on their home ranch, followed by Garys’ Vineyard in 1997 in partnership with the Pisoni family. The inaugural vintage of ROAR was released in 2001, crafted from these two vineyards. From the outset, the couple’s mission was to create wines they themselves would enjoy drinking, a vision that garnered critical acclaim almost immediately. About a decade later, they expanded their endeavor by planting two additional vineyards: Sierra Mar and Soberanes. Today, Gary and his sons continue to enhance and innovate in both the vineyards and winery, striving to produce the highest quality wines their land can offer.

Robert Biale Winery

decanting wine

Perfecting the old California classics, Robert Biale Vineyards has become a revered standard of heritage vineyard Zinfandel and Petite Sirah in the Napa Valley. From the winery’s inception, the Biale founders have cherished the tradition of historic old vines, some dating back to the 1880s, and they prize the small quantity of concentrated and intense fruit that these vines produce. Diligent farming, expressive terroir, and superb elegance define the winery’s hallmarks. Among the winery’s portfolio of 20 wines crafted by Winemaker David Natali, Black Chicken Zinfandel stands out as the flagship and has become a benchmark for the varietal.

The story began in the 1940s when 14-year-old Aldo Biale helped his mother make ends meet by selling homemade Zinfandel, along with eggs and produce, to insider Napans. Over the old “party line” phone system, the code words “a Black Chicken” signified a jug of bootleg wine, keeping nosy neighbors and the authorities from discovering Aldo’s underground Zinfandel operation.

Robert Craig Wine Cellars

wine dancing in the glass

Robert (Bob) Craig, the founder of Robert Craig Winery, began his long and storied career in wine at The Hess Collection on Mount Veeder in the 1980s. Before establishing his eponymous winery, Bob's passion for Napa Valley Mountain Cabernet led him to spearhead the official recognition of both the Mount Veeder and Spring Mountain District AVAs.

In 1990, with the help of three friends he met at business school in Chicago 25 years earlier, Bob founded Robert Craig Winery. He arranged to purchase fruit and custom crush his first commercial release of the 1992 vintage. The 1993 vintage release introduced three Cabernets that remain the core of the winery's business today: Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder, and Affinity. Now, four decades later, Bob Craig is recognized as one of the most important figures in Mountain Cabernet development and production in Napa Valley history. Drawn to the mountain terroir of Napa Valley, Bob found his calling on Howell Mountain. In 1995, he and his partners purchased 22 acres at the summit of Howell Mountain, the vineyard property that would become the winery's estate. The first Howell Mountain vintage was released the following year to critical acclaim.

Bob and his wife Lynn worked tirelessly to promote the Mountain Cabernet message across the country over the next decade. The Wine Spectator named Robert Craig Winery one of its "Top 50 Producers," while reviewers such as Robert Parker Jr., Stephen Tanzer, and others heaped praise on the Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder, and Affinity Cabernets. During the 1990s and early 2000s, the number of wineries in Napa Valley nearly tripled, and the number of Napa Valley brands grew more than tenfold. This led to a much more competitive environment for small wineries. To navigate this crowded landscape, Robert and his partners hired wine business veteran and Mountain Cabernet aficionado Elton Slone in 2004 to direct all operations at the winery. Elton retooled and refocused farming practices, winery equipment, and personnel in the first years of his leadership, bringing the wines to their highest level of concentration, complexity, age-worthiness, and site expression. With a renewed emphasis on quality farming and winemaking, as well as carefully selected vineyard parcels, the winery received outstanding reviews from The Wine Spectator, Robert Parker Jr., and Antonio Galloni, among others.

Elton Slone and the Robert Craig Winery team continue to honor Bob’s founding principles of producing small-lot, site-expressive wines from high-elevation vineyards with shallow soils. Elton became a full partner in 2007 and, following Bob’s retirement and departure from the wine business in 2012, has continued to lead the winery forward with the other three founding partners: Michael Adams, Derek Ruston, and Michael Nugent.

Robert Foley, Winemaker

Robert (Bob) Foley began his winemaking career in the Napa Valley in 1977 after graduating from UC Davis with degrees in both Viticulture and Enology. His first year was spent at Heitz Cellars, followed by 15 years as the founding winemaker at Markham Vineyards.

In 1992, Foley embarked on another 15-year tenure as the founding winemaker at Pride Mountain Vineyards. During this time, he also crafted the highly acclaimed Switchback Ridge, Hourglass, Paloma, and School House wines. Currently, his primary focus is on the wines produced at Robert Foley Vineyards, though he also oversees the creations for Shelter, Padis Vineyards, Herson Family Vineyards, and JennaMarise Wines in Napa Valley.

In 1998, Robert Foley Vineyards bottled its flagship Claret and has since expanded its production to include a range of notable reds, such as Petite Sirah, Merlot, Charbono, and limited-release Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon and Howell Mountain Merlot from their estate property. The portfolio also features Carneros Pinot Noir, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Mount Veeder Cabernet Sauvignon, and The Griffin, a blend that varies in varietal composition each vintage. Additionally, Foley has bottled a medium-bodied Chablis-style Chardonnay, a Syrah called Kelly's Cuvée, and a Port-style dessert wine named Conclusão.

Foley’s reputation for crafting expressive wines that finish gracefully continues to grow at his winery on Howell Mountain in Napa County. The facility, which houses over 1,000 barrels in an extensive cave system completed in 2008, supports the production of Robert Foley wines.

Robert Foley Vineyards operates with a full-time staff of three, with Foley himself focusing on winemaking, while Kelly and Shannon manage the office. Occasionally, Kelly’s father, Jerry, assists in the tasting room.

The feline Office Interns, Mina, Spike, and Jimmy da Kitten, are responsible for treats, naps, and distractions, while Princess Bella and King Tommy serve as the official Winery Cats.

Couple walking in vineyard

We had a very nice host that was pouring us all sorts of wine. She truely made us feel special because her mission was to find us a wine to like. It is a nice big tasting room with the big square bar, beautiful water fountain out front and some tables outside to enjoy the view. I never gave this place a fair chance because I have tried there wine at the grocery store and wasn't pleased. Well now that I have tried all there wines it is very good especially the reds! So give this place a fighting chance and it will not disappoint you.
