Corksworth & Oliver: A Curious Pour -Episode II

Professor Corksworth and Oliver

Episode II — The Winery by the River

Professor Corksworth and Oliver arrive where the road narrows and the stories begin.

A Road Easily Missed

There are roads that lead somewhere… …and then there are roads that almost don’t.

On the western edge of Fresno, where the land begins to quiet and the air carries a different kind of stillness, Professor Corksworth slowed his pace.

Oliver, map in hand, frowned slightly. “Professor… I think we missed it.”

Corksworth adjusted his spectacles, glancing toward a narrow turn marked only by a modest sign—one easily overlooked among the dust and sun-faded posts.

My dear Oliver,” he said gently, “the places most worth finding are often the easiest to miss.”

A quiet corner of the valley—easily passed, rarely forgotten.

A Turn Toward the River

The road curved subtly, guiding them away from the expected and toward something quieter. In the distance, a line of trees hinted at the presence of water.

The San Joaquin River,” Corksworth noted.

As they approached, the vineyard revealed itself—not grand, not imposing, but grounded.

Oliver’s eyes lit up.

This doesn’t feel like the other places…

No,” Corksworth replied. “It feels like it was built with intention, rather than expectation.”

The Man Behind the Vines

They were greeted not by a host in uniform, but by a man whose presence felt inseparable from the land itself.

Welcome,” he said simply.

Oliver stepped forward. “Are you the owner?

The man nodded. “John.

Corksworth inclined his head respectfully toward John Nale.

A pleasure,” Corksworth said. “We’ve come not simply to taste… but to understand.”

The Pour

Inside, there was no rush. No script. Just a quiet rhythm.

A glass was poured, a Cabernet Sauvignon from Ziveli.

Where curiosity meets craft—one pour at a time.

Corksworth lifted the glass, studying the way the light moved through it—deep, expressive, unhurried.

He inhaled. “Dark fruit… a trace of earth… and something else…

Oliver leaned in. “What is it?

Corksworth took a measured sip, then smiled. “Conviction.

In moments like these, the wine is not tasted—it is understood.

In moments like these, the wine is not tasted—it is understood.

As they spoke, the story unfolded—not loudly, but steadily. This was not a winery built for crowds. Not designed for passing traffic. Not crafted for recognition. It was built because it needed to be.

There’s something different about this place,” Oliver said quietly.

John nodded. “We’re not trying to be anywhere else.”

Corksworth’s eyes softened.

And that,” he said, “is precisely why this works.

The River’s Influence

Later, they walked the edge of the vineyard where the air cooled ever so slightly.

The river changes things,” John said.

Corksworth nodded. “Water always does.

Oliver looked out, watching the subtle movement of leaves.

So this place… it’s kind of hidden on purpose?”

John paused.

Not hidden,” he said. “Just… not advertised.”

A Different Kind of Discovery

As the sun lowered, casting long golden lines across the vines, Oliver folded his map once again.

This one was hard to find,” Oliver admitted.

Corksworth smiled. “Yes,” he said. “And yet, here we are.

He glanced back toward the vineyard—quiet, unassuming, and entirely itself.

Tell me, Oliver… do you think this place would be the same if everyone knew about it?”

Oliver thought for a moment.

Then shook his head.

Corksworth raised his glass slightly, the last light of day catching its edge.

Some wineries,” he said softly, “are built to be visited…” He paused. “…and others are built to be discovered.”
