Klinker Brick Winery

Steve and Lori Felten, fifth-generation grape growers in the Lodi region, uphold the tradition of cultivating "Old Vine" Zinfandel vineyards originally planted by their ancestors in the early 1900s.

Their family's journey began in Germany, Russia, and later the Dakotas before settling in Lodi. Initially producing watermelons, they soon recognized the region's ideal soil and climate for grape cultivation. They began planting various grape varieties, including Zinfandel, Tokay, Carignane, and Alicante. For over a century, the family has diligently nurtured the land with the goal of producing top-quality fruit. Zinfandel was among the first grape varieties introduced in the Lodi appellation, though it had already been established in other parts of California.

Originally, grapes were packed in boxes and shipped to the East Coast and Canada for home winemaking. In the early years, nearly all of the Zinfandel grapes were sent off, except for those used for home winemaking.

By the mid-1930s, grapes were primarily sold to cooperatives and larger private wineries, with only a small portion of production shipped east.

Historically, the vineyards were irrigated using flood or ditch methods, which led to larger yields of marginal quality due to the difficulty in regulating water application. In the late 1980s, the introduction of drip irrigation allowed for precise control over water distribution to each vine. This innovation enabled better control of vine vigor, resulting in healthier fruit and ultimately, lower yields. With the adoption of advanced vineyard practices such as shoot thinning, leaf pulling, color thinning, and the removal of second crops, the family was able to achieve the production of exceptionally high-quality grapes.

Part of the extended Felten Family includes their winemaker, Barry Gnekow, who is responsible for crafting the wines from the inaugural vintage. Barry, a Davis graduate with over 25 years of experience of winemaking, has a unique ability to bring the best of the vineyard into the cellar, year after year, producing wines of distinction for Klinker Brick.

Another extended family member is Lynne Whyte Barnard, the President of Klinker Brick Winery. Lynne has brought a wealth of entrepreneurial experience to the winery, having owned her own wholesale company and directing sales and marketing for prestigious wine producers in California. She was instrumental in the development of the Old Ghost wine, label design and has been responsible for selling all of the vintages produced to date, developing national and international distribution.

French Bordeaux and Burgundies in a blind tasting in France. Since then, David Bruce wines have consistently taken top honors in competitive tastings.

West Wind Wines & Caves

West Wind Wines has the only wine cave in Marin County. It took two years to get the permits and two months to build the cave. It is kept at 55 degrees year around to keep the wine in the barrels cool and humid. Inside the cave at an “aroma table”, owner and winemaker Cynthia Klock encourages guests to sniff a hand full of cloves, sniff the wine and then take a sip. The scent will bring out the distinctive essences of cloves in the wine. She also has separate glasses with bits of chocolate, oak, herbs, leather, vanilla and pepper to illustrate the different characteristics in other wines. For example, a sniff of vanilla brings out that unique nature in the Muscat Canelli.

Firestone Vineyards

Founded by legendary tire innovator Harvey Firestone’s son, Leonard, and his son, Brooks, Firestone Vineyard was the first estate winery established in Santa Barbara County in 1972. What began as a dream to plant a vineyard and establish a winery has today, with Vintner Bill Foley’s guidance, grown to 325 certified sustainable vineyard acres in one of the most desirable appellations in California — Santa Ynez Valley.

Firestone Vineyard's wines include varietals such as Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, Syrah, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Their 325 acres of historic vineyards lie approximately 26 miles from the cold Pacific Ocean, creating a moderate, arid climate and an extremely long growing season. These unique growing conditions, combined with certified sustainable farming techniques, yield wines that are concentrated, elegant, and firmly structured.

Mariah Vineyards

Dan and Vicki Dooling originally planted the Mariah Vineyard in 1980 and continue to manage it today, along with their children. The Mariah Vineyard sits 2,600 feet above sea level in the Mendocino Ridge appellation. The Mendocino Ridge is unique in the world, as the vineyards must be above 1,200 feet. Situated on the rugged North Coast, just above the fog line. The Mariah Vineyard has sparse soils and is warmed each day before the maritime breezes are drawn westward and cool the vineyard, allowing the grapes to rest each night. These conditions prove challenging for growing grapes but result in fruit with intensity and rich, complex flavors.

Casa Cassara Winery & Vineyard

When Bennie Cassara first set foot on this mountain top retreat he knew this was the place for which he had been looking. Bennie a brick mason by trade was busy running his Masonry construction company in Orange County California, but he was looking for a place where he and his could get away from the daily grind. It was in 1990 the first vines were planted on the tiny hilltop estate. Bennie Cassara chose Pinot Noir grapes at the urging of his friend Brian Babcock of the Babcock Winery. Brian told Bennie his property would be the perfect growing environment for Pinot Noir grapes, this variatal is grown on hillsides in France, and Brian knew the combination of warm days and cool foggy nights would be perfect. Much of the rest of the story is in the glass.

Fess Parker Winery & Vineyard

picture of Fess Parker

In 1987, Parker purchased a 714 acre ranch thirty five miles north of Santa Barbara, in the Santa Ynez Valley, where he promptly set about planning and establishing Fess Parker's Winery & Vineyard. I remember visiting some years ago the Fess Parker Winery and my wife and I having lunch at their Inn. I also remember growing up wearing a coonskin cap and pretending to be Davy Crockett. I never met Mr. Parker in person; however, I just have to admit how sentimental and touched I felt when I heard that he had died. I guess it is safe to say Fess lives on through the family he has left behind and the legacy he has left to his family and indirectly to us, Fess Parker Winery.

Highland Valley Vineyards

Highland Valley Vineyards is a boutique micro winery perched on the edge of beautiful Highland Valley in the San Diego foothills. On our hillside vineyards, we grow Bordeaux variety grapes and together with other fruit carefully selected, we hand style robust red wines. In 2007 we acquired our property in Highland Valley and in 2009 began construction on the winery and vineyard. Grapes have been grown in this valley for over a hundred years. As a nod to that long history, we named our vineyard/winery Highland Valley Vineyards and built the winery in 1920’s craftsman-style design.
We blend old craft with new technologies to hand style wines of character and distinction. Our special interest is big red wines with full body, a great finish but retaining nice fruit and nose. We have sourced our grapes from here in San Diego (South Coast), Mexico, Paso Robles (Central Coast), Amador County (Sierra Foothills), and Dry Creek Valley (Sonoma County North Coast).

Long Creek Winery
