I generally prefer the Chardonnay production of the French in Burgundy but Kongsgaard is legendary in here for a reason. It bridges the styles of your American oak-ey/buttery styles with the mineral, citrus and complexities. One of the best California Chards. Kongsgaard Wine is closed to the public and sold to members only and in some fine dinning establishments.
Alpen Cellars, established on a family ranch in the spring of 1984, is situated in a picturesque mountain valley at the foot of towering craggy peaks in the rugged Trinity Lake region of Trinity County, California. It seems an unlikely location to attempt to grow wine grapes. But the notion, a product of a young enology student's vision, turned out to be notably rewarding.

We were taking to a back table in the warehouse and went through the tasting. Ask for the Passionaie (off menu) as it's quite delightful. They also have a bottle called BDX that is on the wine list at The French Laundry, but I far preferred the Passionaie. Pricey wines and a pricey tasting but totally worth the experience.

Located in the westernmost section of the Santa Ynez Valley in Santa Barbara County, it lies at the foot of Point Conception, flanked by the Purisima Mountains to the north and the Santa Rosa Mountains to the south. This mountainous terrain forms a significant corridor leading into the Pacific Ocean, influencing the area's climate and terroir.
Wine enthusiasts are drawn to the AVA’s brisk ocean breezes and the late-morning maritime fog that blankets the vineyards, making Sta. Rita Hills one of the coolest growing regions in the world. The varied soil types—including marine sand, loam, clay, and limestone—contribute to the complexity of the wines produced here. Elevations range from near sea level to 1,800 feet, offering diverse microclimates for grape growing.
The region experiences a semi-arid climate, with an average annual rainfall of just 13 inches, primarily occurring between December and May. This allows vintners to extend the “hang time” of the fruit, free from the threat of fall rains that can challenge other Pinot Noir and Chardonnay regions. The extreme conditions, particularly the cold and windy climate, result in low yields, leading to Pinot Noirs with deep color and intense flavor profiles, making Sta. Rita Hills a must-visit for any passionate wine lover.
We stopped in here several years ago, quite confused, because I had read about another winery with a similar name in the area and I was looking for the fields of lavender. Obviously that's not what you'll get in this industrial warehouse near Healsburg square, but it's not about the scenery here - it's all about the wines, and how delicious they are. If you're a fan of big, bold Zins, I cannot recommend this place enough. They also make a very decent Chardonnay and some Syrah and Petit Syrahs, but my heart belongs to the zin, especially the amazing Stealth.
Oakville Ranch is the original mountain vineyard of the sub-appellation that produces the New World's most celebrated Cabernets. Covering just two square miles at the heart of Napa Valley, the Oakville district may be small, but its wines play a very big role in the connoisseur's collection. At 1,400 feet above the valley floor, the Oakville Ranch vineyards produce fruit that speaks from the appellation's signature red volcanic soil with a mountain accent. In the two decades since Bob and Mary Miner purchased the 350-acre ranch, plantings have slowly increased from an initial 55 acres to today's 75 acres of predominantly Bordeaux varietals. It's definitely a trek up the mountain, but well worth it. Kristin led our tasting in the greenhouse--the grounds are amazing and the wines are especially good (Cab Franc). They are only open by appt. M - F, but it you will be on the Silverado Trail on a weekday call and make an appt.

The reds were all fantastic..I really was pleasantly surprised. Their tasting room has a large table that they invite you to sit at, or , you can go outside and sit at those smaller tables, if you choose to. Wines are fantastic and the people here are passionate, welcoming and knowledgeable. They host a number of fun events and perks for wine club members. They also are well known for their micro-batch wine making - come make your own wine from start to finish (blending, bottling, labeling) with the experts!
