In 1914, Eliza and Mads Peterson purchased a 100-acre property situated on the floor of Napa Valley at the mouth of Dutch Henry Canyon. Both Eliza and Mads had immigrated to the United States in the late 1800s—Eliza from Ireland and Mads from Denmark—and, like many others of that era, ventured westward in search of a place to call home.
The property, nestled just off the Silverado Trail between St. Helena and Calistoga, was home to a small Zinfandel vineyard. However, with the onset of Prohibition in 1920, prunes quickly became the dominant cash crop in Napa Valley. In response, the Petersons planted a plum orchard to help support their large family. Caring for the orchard, along with a large vegetable garden and numerous farm animals, became a full-time job for the entire family, including their six sons and three daughters.
When the time came to pass the property on, it was the daughters—not the sons—who took on the responsibility. Vera, Carrie, and Mae worked diligently to preserve the family legacy, maintaining the buildings, plum orchard, vegetable garden, and livestock. Vera tended to the land, Carrie managed the books, and Mae returned each summer to assist with the harvest.

Discover Cache Creek Vineyards & Winery and the Land Bill “Poppo” Van Pelt, our father and grandfather. Bill vowed to keep the land as a sanctuary for the elk. Several ponds around the property serve as water sources for waterfowl, otters, beaver, wild turkeys, deer, and elk. Owl boxes placed throughout the vineyard provide a natural method of gopher control.

A hobby gone wild! That is how Idle Hour Winery, formerly Panoche Valley Vineyards, got its start. Winemaker Anna Marie dos Remedios began making wine as a hobby to relieve the stress of her day job as a newspaper journalist/business owner. Anna Marie is focused on small lot, single-vineyard designated wines from some of California's best wine-growing regions. Anna Marie learned traditional winemaking methods from mentor and renowned Pinot Noir producer Josh Jensen at Calera Wine Company. At Idle Hour Winery the focus is on these traditional methods: native yeast fermentation, gravity flow racking and the use of neutral French Oak; all very gentle in nature, applying these to all the varieties Anna Marie ferments. Winemaker Brian Darwazeh has deep roots in California agriculture. Raised in a small farming community in Northern California, and with a grandfather who worked the land, Brian's connection to California-grown fruit is personal. For him, working with local harvests and experiencing the rhythm of the land and seasons is a labor of love. Brian is drawn to the Sierra Foothills for its diverse microclimates and the wide variety of grape varietals that thrive there. His passion lies in creating fruit-driven wines that express the true character of each varietal, with minimal intervention.
