Boyle MacDonald Wines

Bottle of Boyd MacDonald and a wine glass

Boyle MacDonald Wines began when husband and wife team, Craig MacDonald and Kate Boyle MacDonald, planted their family estate Napa Valley Vineyard to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. The portfolio of offerings grew as Kate and Craig pursued personally farming and sourcing from additional Sierra Foothills vineyards. The portfolio includes a diverse selection of Estate Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, as well as Sierra Foothill Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Merlot, Sangiovese and Montepulciano. In addition to varietal bottlings and lovely Red Blends, Boyle MacDonald has become well known for producing Provence-style Dry Rosés and also for producing interesting and rare white wines from red varietals. The Winemaker
Winemaker Kate Boyle MacDonald has over twenty years of experience in the cellar.  Kayte started as a apprentice/cellar hand in 1999. Serving as winemaker for a few wineries, today Kate is a now seasoned Winemaker. Kate’s talents quickly been acknowledged by her peers and allowed to thrive in Calaveras County. While she personally planted and tends the family estate vineyard in Napa Valley, her winemaking is rooted in California's Foothills of the Sierras. Having grown up in Germany, France, and all over the US, Kate uses the incredible California new world fruit, to create wines in the traditional old world style, exhibiting elegance, finesse and balance.

Brander Vineyard

The winery building referred by the staff as "The Barn" was the original structure at Bander. At "The Barn" Fred Bander personally hosted wine tastings inside on a rustic picnic table. This winery today is located on the estate just yards from the nearest vines. This means grapes can almost be immediately processed ater they are harvest, which has a tremendously beneficial impact on the wines produced. Frederic "Fred" Brander, owner and winemaker, was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He moved with his family and settled in Santa Barbara, California. Fred started his career in the wine business by working for a local wine merchant, and later went to work in the wholesale business. While attending college, he started his own wine import company, focusing on wines from France and Argentina. Wishing to make his own wines, and with a fondness for Santa Barbara, Fred and his family established The Brander Vineyard in the Santa Ynez Valley in 1975. The initial planting was mainly Bordeaux grape varietals and in 1977, the first Sauvignon Blanc grapes were taken to a neighboring winery where Fred Brander produced a wine so distinctive it captured Santa Barbara County's first gold medal for a wine at a major wine competition (1978 Los Angeles County Fair).

Breggo Cellars

Breggo means "sheep" in Boontling, in honor of our place, a 203-acre farm just north of Boonville. Our Craftsman house from the 1920s and random cluster of sideways-tilting outbuildings recently served as headquarters to one of the oldest and largest sheep ranches in Anderson Valley. For 150 years, sheep dominated the agricultural landscape of Anderson Valley. Sheep, like the domesticated vinifera grapevine, occupy and even thrive on the geographic periphery - places too steep, with soils too thin and climates too cold for other types of intensive agriculture. Sheep and vines flourish where the domesticated meets the wilderness. The margins. This is our place.

We also had a fantastic little table across the creek in the trees and each wine was explained to us. We really loved our experience and the wine is fantastic. I think this is a great little gem. The level of service, the little snack plate, the wine was amazing and it isn't sold in stores, so you have to know this place. All the reds were great overall, they seem to put a lot of care and time into their wines.

Bressler Vineyards

Located in the small, historic town of St. Helena (yes, part of Napa Valley) Bressler like many of its neighbors is a small lot, premium producer of Cabernet Sauvignon. Bressler was started as many wineries do in Napa, with the retirement of an executive from nearby Silicon Valley. Bob Bressler spent his career at Sun Microsystems where he was a visiting scientist and advised the Sun executive team. Bob's wife Stacey is also intimately involved with the day to day operations of the winery and comes to the wine business after her own successful career in the Bay Area high tech market, although her focus was more marketing than it was the technology itself. Small production winery of approx. 500 cases.
