Jason Bushong grew up in Southern California in the 80s, doing what most kids were into—collecting vinyl, jamming to Duran Duran, and exploring his passions. Over time, one passion stood out: wine.

With over 20 years in the winemaking industry, Jason’s love for the craft led him to open his own tasting room, Bushong Vintage Company, in November 2017. It’s here that he shares his unique vision and experience with wine enthusiasts.

Located in northern Santa Barbara County on the Sisquoc River 14 miles east of Santa Maria, Rancho Sisquoc is part of an 1852 Spanish land grant. The Chumash Indians called this area "Sisquoc", which meant "gathering place".   Today Rancho Sisquoc is again a gathering place, this time for wine lovers.

Opolo Vineyards

Rick Quinn and David Nichols started as neighbors, became friends, and eventually joined forces to fulfill their shared dream of creating a winemaking legacy in Paso Robles.

In 1997, Rick and David began planting vineyards, and by 1999, they established their family winery in the coastal mountains of the Willow Creek District. They chose the name Opolo to honor Quinn's Serbian heritage, referencing a rosé-style wine native to the Dalmatian Coast.

Although the modern winemaking era in Paso Robles was just beginning, Rick and David recognized the region’s immense potential. They focused on Zinfandel, a heritage grape of Paso Robles, as well as Bordeaux and Rhône varieties that would come to define the area's reputation.

Since then, Opolo has become a cornerstone of the Paso Robles experience, known for its widely acclaimed estate wines, warm hospitality, and legendary wine club. Today, Opolo offers a diverse selection of wines, including the iconic Mountain Zinfandel, limited-release reserves, and vineyard designates. Visitors are invited to explore the world of Opolo at their tasting room.

Parrish Family Vineyards

The Parrish family has deep roots in the Paso Robles area. Earl Henderson is David Parrish’s grandfather and was one of the first people to plant in Atascadero during Prohibition. In fact, he had P.O. Box 1. Today, his home is the site of the Atascadero Historical Museum.

In the 1920s, Henderson planted 540 acres and managed approximately 740 acres of wine grapes including Alicante, Charbon, Petite Sirah, and Zinfandel. The Zinfandel cuttings were purchased from the famed Paderewski Ranch.

Henderson grew grapes through the beginning of Prohibition and then got into the golf course business.

Inspired by his grandfather's stories, David Parrish set out to test his own green thumb. After graduating from U.C. Davis in 1974, he pursued his passion for grape growing by establishing A&P Ag Structures, a vineyard trellising company. His expertise caught the attention of Napa Valley's Robert Mondavi, leading to collaborations on trellising installations for Mondavi's vineyards and other renowned wineries like Beringer.

Nearly two decades later, Parrish returned to California's Central Coast, aiming to carry on his grandfather's legacy of grape growing. In 2004, he produced the first vintage under the Parrish Family label, now managing 70 acres in Paso Robles.

In 2018, marking another milestone, the Parrish family opened a wine and food destination on Adelaida Road. The tasting room offers vineyard walks, winery tours, food and wine pairings, tastings, bottle services, event spaces, and conference facilities. Indoors and outdoors, guests can explore their palate preferences, relax with wine, and find inspiration. The property even features a putting green with complimentary putters and golf balls for those looking to unwind.

Wolff Vineyards

glass of wine

This vineyard is such a little gem! They are located on top of a hill so the view is gorgeous, and they have an adorable patio area. The servers are extremely knowledgeable, pleasant and attentive, even when the counter is packed full. I appreciated the hospitality. Great view from the patio, a nice place to bring some snacks and enjoy a tasting. A couple nice well behaved dogs hang out with you while you are enjoying your tasting. The Old Vine Chardonnay, Red Wolff, Syrah and Petite Syrah were all good. Many of the wines are particularly good with a cheddar based cracker, check out the deli.

Winemaker Aaron Jackson

Hailing from California's beautiful Central Coast, Aaron Jackson's journey into winemaking began with a thought-provoking question: “How can we write a new story for Central Coast wine, and how do we unlock its potential?” With a thirst for answers, Aaron found himself working in coastal Pinot Noir vineyards near his hometown of Cayucos, alongside crafting wines from the celebrated westside of Paso Robles, especially the distinctive Petite Sirah.

While studying wine at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, Aaron pooled together his hard-earned pennies from weekend jobs to launch his own label, debuting with the first vintage of Aaron Petite Sirah in 2002. His career blossomed as he collaborated with several acclaimed wineries in Paso Robles and earned a Master’s degree in Oenology from the University of Adelaide in South Australia.

In 2017, Aaron took on the ambitious task of spearheading the creation of the San Luis Obispo Coast AVA (SLO Coast), which proudly gained approval in 2021.

Now, with over 20 years of experience under his belt, Aaron remains committed to pushing boundaries and celebrating his homeland through his wines. Each bottle reflects his authenticity and passion for unearthing the incredible potential of Paso Robles and the stunning San Luis Obispo Coast. For those who love California wines, Aaron Jackson is a winemaker to watch!
