We ate at the kitchen first which was absolutely delicious. I never ever thought I would eat some tomato bisque. Yummy. Then walked next door to the tasting room and used our 2 for 1 coupons and started tasting. Donna was a very good host and was able to be attentive to everyone. She was Explaining what all wines were that we drank. And also offered some suggestions. Nice. The winery is very nice which have a kitchen next door.

Ultimate Vineyards, situated in the heart of Temecula Valley wine country, produces wines primarily from its 75-acre estate vineyard. This vineyard benefits from a unique combination of geological and topographical features that result in fruit with exceptional intensity, weight, and richness. Positioned in the bed of the ancient Santa Margarita River, the vineyard has accumulated millennia of sediment deposits. It also rests in a natural geological bowl, where cooler nighttime air drifts in and settles, preserving higher levels of acidity and tannins in the grapes. The ample sunshine, combined with gentle ocean breezes, helps the grapes develop deep color and sugars.

The vineyard’s soil, mostly sandy loam, offers excellent drainage but has low organic matter due to limited rainfall. To foster "Living Soils," Ultimate Vineyards enhances soil health through annual applications of organic compost, inoculation with beneficial microbes, and the planting of nitrogen-fixing cover crops. Their philosophy centers on creating a thriving, healthy ecosystem in the soil to promote better vine growth, more consistent ripening, and higher quality grapes. To achieve this, Ultimate Vineyards avoids the use of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides on their soils.

Much of the beauty of Retzlaff Vineyards lies in its commitment to organic practices. As a pioneer in organic grape growing, Retzlaff stands out as the only California Certified Organic vineyard in the greater San Francisco Bay region, making it a must-visit for wine lovers.

The vineyard’s dedication to organic methods, along with meticulous canopy management and vineyard health, results in wines of exceptional quality. Visitors can savor the authenticity and complexity of wines crafted from grapes that are free from chemical residues.

The clean, bright, and evenly ripened fruit translates into fresh, delightful wines that showcase the true nature of each grape varietal. The winemaker often likens their approach to savoring an organic, sun-kissed peach plucked directly from the tree, striving to ensure that each berry in the vineyard embodies that perfect peach experience. For California wine enthusiasts, a visit to Retzlaff Vineyards promises not only exquisite wines but also a deep appreciation for the beauty of organic viticulture.

Heron Wines

Winemaker Laely Heron’s philosophy and wines embody her adventurous, daring, and non-traditional spirit. A global traveler, she has visited or lived on six continents and all 50 states, with a remarkable ability to converse in multiple languages, including French, Danish, and several others.

By age 10, Heron had already lived in 12 states due to her father’s career as a mining engineer and adventurer. The family’s move to Algeria led to extensive travels through southern Africa and other regions before returning to the U.S. for her high school education.

After two years at the University of Colorado, Heron spent her junior year in France, which ignited her passion for wine and led her to the Institute of Enology in Bordeaux. Following her studies, she became the first American employee of Lindeman’s in San Francisco before moving to Denmark to start an import company, open a restaurant, teach wine classes, and pursue Master of Wine certification.

In 1995, Heron founded Heron Wines in San Francisco, breaking new ground as a female business owner in a male-dominated industry. Her first release, a Merlot from St. Chinian, quickly gained acclaim. Over the years, Heron Wines expanded to include a diverse portfolio of wines from California and Spain, earning a reputation as a “cult wine” among sommeliers and top restaurants.

Today, Heron Wines continues to produce California Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Sauvignon, celebrating 28 years of success in the wine industry.

Robert Hall Winery

vineyard at sundown

We had a very nice host that was pouring us all sorts of wine. She truely made us feel special because her mission was to find us a wine to like. It is a nice big tasting room with the big square bar, beautiful water fountain out front and some tables outside to enjoy the view. I never gave this place a fair chance because I have tried there wine at the grocery store and wasn't pleased. Well now that I have tried all there wines it is very good especially the reds! So give this place a fighting chance and it will not disappoint you.

Mayacamas Vineyards

wine with four footed friends

Mayacamas Vineyards is a wine estate located in the Mayacamas Mountains that divide the Napa and Sonoma valleys. Near the top of Mount Veeder, the old stone winery was dug into the side of a dormant volcano crater in the late 19th century. Fifty-two acres of vineyards are planted on mountainsides ranging from 1,800 to 2,400 feet above sea level. Deer, eagles, cougars, foxes, bobcats, and an occasional bear and mountain lion still inhabit this rugged terrain. A hidden gem that conjurs up what old world winemaking is suposed to be like rather than a theme park. Only open by appt. on weekdays, but the wine and the location are stunning. And be prepared for quite a little drive (Greg Lemond trained on the road up there prepping for the Tour de France) with stunning views as a big payoff.  Art work by Wine Artist Gata Zaborowski - Agata Art Gallery

Altamura Winery

Frank Altamura’s passion for detail is clearly defined by his richly textured, highly collectable wine. Founded in 1985 by Napa Valley natives Frank and Karen Altamura, Altamura Vineyards and Winery is located on a sprawling natural ranch on Wooden Valley Road in Napa Valley where estate grown Cabernet Sauvignon and Sangiovese are meticulously produced. Gorgeous drive up to Wooden Valley but it's really not that far from Napa...10 minutes? Soooo worth it!

The Winery: Hefty pours and knowledgable pourers. The winery is notable for having 10 different sparkling wines and we took a brief tour of the sparkling wine facilities. I particularly liked the ruby cuvee and most of the wines are great for the price. The Restaurant: All of the food was decent, but I was particularly impressed by the soups. I ordered a corn and clam chowder, which tied together 2 of my favorite soups in creamy and savory perfection. The French onion soup was just as tasty and loaded with cheese.

Vindemia Vineyards & Winery

people sharing wine

If you are going Temecula wine tasting from winery to winery in Temecula here is one well worth the short trip out to Vindemia Vineyards and Winery. The setting is lovely, and is a welcome break from the crowded and hurried tasting rooms along the main strip. We were there in the afternoon on a pleasant long weekend, when the whole area was teeming with wine tourists. Even so, Vindemia was laid-back and pleasant. The wine was good, and the server was pleasant and helpful.
