Dolce Winery

Napa Valley's Dolce Winery is the only winery in North America that is solely devoted to producing a single, late harvest wine. It is one of the few wineries in the world willing to make such a commitment, sharing a common philosophy with the great Sauternes producers of Bordeaux. Dolce cellar is located within the caves of its sister winery, Far Niente, in California's Napa Valley. Visitors to the winery are welcomed with a hosted tour, followed by a tasting of current and library vintages. By its nature, Dolce is a rare wine that cannot be produced every year. Dolce is made when a natural, beneficial mold called botrytis cinerea attacks the grapes on the vine, while evaporating the water content and concentrating the sugars, acids and flavors. The inaugural 1985 vintage yielded only six barrels, and production grew to nine barrels in 1986. The 1987 vintage was not fine enough to be bottled and 1988 was so warm that no botrytis formed and the grapes were never harvested. The 1989 vintage was the first commercial release of Dolce and it was introduced to the market in 1992. Visits are by appointment, only.

Created in 1985 by the partners of Far Niente, its existence is the result of overcoming remarkable adversity and developing expertise that no one else in the U.S. has. La Jota wines are handcrafted at their original 1898 fieldstone winery and hillside cave. From the low yielding vines of 28 mountain acres, La Jota produces Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and our crown jewel, the annual Heritage Release Cabernet Sauvignon. La Jota Vineyard was made world-famous by W.S. Keyes who founded this Howell Mountain region in the 1890s and pronounced it as the ideal source for bold, full-bodied and long aging wines. The volcanic soils of La Jota, high attitude and elevation a well as the cooler climate of this unique vineyard site has continued to yield wines of great fruit intensity, structure and aging potential. La Jota Vineyard Company continues to craft Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlots from Howell Mountain that are exceptionally bold, long-aging and full-bodied wines.

Venge Vineyards

The Venge (ven-ghee) family has farmed vitis vinifera varieties in Napa Valley for nearly half a century. It is a journey that began when Knud Venge emigrated from Denmark to the United States in the early 1900’s. Knud’s son, Per Venge, found his passion in the wine and spirits industry and started Vencom Imports, focusing on the importation of Western European fine wines and spirits. It was Per’s son, Nils Venge, who left the family business in the 1960’s with a vision to study viticulture at UC Davis and establish the family name as an icon in the winegrowing community.

The family’s viticultural roots flourished in 1976 with the purchase of a 17-acre vineyard in the Oakville District that was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. This fortunate development cast the family among the winemaking pioneers of Napa Valley.

Nils’ and Dianna Venge’s son, Kirk Venge, gravitated to winemaking at an early age. He proved to be as talented a winemaker as his father, making wines in his own style, with a vision to build on the family legacy. In 2008, Kirk achieved his lifelong dream and acquired full ownership of Venge Vineyards. Today, Kirk continues the Napa Valley heritage, focusing on select vineyard sites that produce fruit worthy of bearing the Venge family name.

Capiaux Cellars

Sean Capiaux has an established and notable career at prominent wineries around the world which include: Jordan, Pine Ridge, and Peter Michael in California; Macari, Jamesport and Schneider in Long Island, NY; and Houghton's in Australia. In 1994 Sean launched his own label, Capiaux Cellars, and he presently works as winemaker for O'Shaughnessy winery in the Howell Mountain appellation of Napa Valley

Sean graduated from California State University, Fresno with a B.S. in Enology and a minor in Chemistry. He began his career at Jordan Winery in Sonoma County's Alexander Valley where he worked for two years before joining Houghton Winery located outside Perth in Western Australia. After working the harvest in Australia, Sean returned to the United States to work as the assistant winemaker at Pine Ridge Winery in the Stags Leap district of Napa Valley. Two years later Sean joined Peter Michael Winery in Calistoga as the assistant winemaker where he worked for four years.

Sherwin Family Vineyards

Steve and Linda Sherwin yearned for a quieter, more relaxed setting to raise their three children. A series of weekend visits to the Napa Valley in 1996 finally uncovered a thirty acre property near the top of Spring Mountain. The property featured a beautiful home and a serene lake but the real prize was the three acres of mixed old vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. These three acres are in the same location that was originally part of a 500 acre estate producing sought-after grapes in the late 1800's through Prohibition. With a a successful career in construction development behind him and a true hands-on approach, Steve began clearing and planting vineyards around the three original acres virtually by himself. He planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot and finished thirteen acres later. The new acreage is actually broken up into three vineyards named after the children: Jenny, Lindsey and Matthew. I had heard it was one of the most beautiful settings to taste wine and we were not disappointed. The tasting room is very relaxed and comfy. I felt like Donna had invited us into her luxury rustic open area kitchen. We sipped our first glass inside and moved out to the patio. We all agreed the weather couldn't have been more beautiful. A perfect day for a perfect taste.

Signorello Vineyards

Great place to visit if you plan to do some wine tasting in the Napa Valley. Decide what tasting you want, and you can even take your glass out back by he infinity pool and enjoy vineyard views, come back in, and get your next tasting, etc. The staff at Signorello are very personable. A pizza oven is currently being installed out on the back and Signorello will be doing wine and pizza on the patio. stop by Signorello Estate if you haven't been yet...Its definitely worth it!

Mason Cellars

This is one of my favorite tasting rooms in Napa by far! They allow dogs inside and the woman who usually pours for us is so nice! Most importantly, however, the wines are extraordinary. Particularly on a warm day, we love coming in to this bright and cheery tasting room for a some Sav Blanc. The 2011 Pomelo for me is the standout among the Sav Blancs for its vivid style and citrus, guava, passionfruit flavors with a grapefruit nose. I almost always end up bringing a bottle home. Honorable mention to the Three Pears and Mason Reserve, which are equally fantastic!

Pavi Wines

Pavi Wines - you can drink (not visit) - have some wonderful Italian varieties...almost the only people in Napa who do. You'll find their wines on a lot of restaurant lists...it's great quality at good prices. I especially love the Pinot Grigio ... way better than the average "nothing there" pinot grigio, very refreshing on a hot afternoon. They sell it by the glass at Calistoga Inn - I'd say it's best on the deck there! You can also find it in St. Helena at Tra Vigne, Farmstead; in Calistoga at Brannan's; and in Rutherford at Rutherford Grill. Levy & Mcclellan

Bob Levy is the winemaker for Harlan Estate, and his wife is the winemaker for the Sloan Estate. Both of them have made wines that have scored perfect 100 point ratings. They bought a 6 acre lot in the Diamond Mountain area, and the case production for their 1st and 2nd vintages is 400 cases or less. Robert Parker gave their 1st vintage, the 2004 vintage a rating of 96-98 points, and their 2005 vintage a rating of 95-97 points. What a great way to start off. Their wines look to have excellent cellaring life. Their maximum estimated case production, given their current vineyard of 6 acres is around 500-600 cases at best. This is less then half the production of Harlan and about the same as Screaming Eagle. On average, Levy & McClellans case production will be less then that of Screaming Eagle. As of right now, there is no waiting list to get into Levy & McClellan. But, I will say this right now, given the great history of these 2 great winemakers, it will not take long for their list to fill up and a very long waiting list to form. The Wine Levy & McClellan produces the following wine varietals: Bordeaux Blend and Cabernet Franc.
