The Marshall family has deep roots in the Sanger area, tracing their history back to the early 1900s when Hugh M. Marshall purchased 160 acres northeast of Sanger, where the family continues to farm today. Wine lovers who enjoy visiting wineries can appreciate the diverse agricultural legacy of the Marshalls, who have cultivated various crops over the decades, including figs, wheat, table and raisin grapes, plums, and nectarines, before ultimately focusing on wine grapes.

The Marshalls have always been hands-on in the processing of their crops, a commitment that led Hugh M. Marshall Jr. to establish the packing operation H. M. Marshall & Son in 1954, specializing in growing, packing, and shipping tree fruit and various types of grapes.

In the early 1980s, the family resumed shipping wine grapes to the East Coast for home winemaking. Hugh’s son began his journey in the wine grape business by accompanying his father on vineyard inspections, purchasing grapes, and preparing them for shipment. While attending Fresno State, he took on a full-time role in the business, picking, packing, and shipping grapes from those same vineyards.

As his interest in wine and winemaking grew, he began to craft wines from the grapes they had been cultivating for years. Initial attempts were rough, but encouragement from his wife, Jenifer, led him to submit his wines to various state and county fair competitions. His wines soon garnered numerous awards, including gold, silver, and bronze ribbons. Each recognition, as well as setbacks, spurred him to improve his craft. He enhanced his knowledge by taking classes from the UC Davis Extension Enology department and attending seminars at Fresno State and Sonoma State.

In 2012, after years of encouragement from family and friends, Hugh and Jenifer launched their own wine label, Maréchal Vineyards. For them, raising their family in a place with such rich agricultural heritage is vital, and they hope wine lovers will join them in celebrating yet another chapter of their family’s adventure in winemaking.

During those years, Hank increased his knowledge of home wine making, applying it to his hobby and passion. Pursuing his dream he searched for suitable land and when a friend, Bruce, suggested 5 acres of vineyard on an 80 acre parcel near Coloma, California, he bought it.

This is a wonderful place for different wines. You must call to arrange an appt and do so at least a week or two in advance. The grounds are wonderful and the building is special. We got to see the caves which had cement containers for some of the wine. Bring your camera for great garden photos. I personally loved their Chardonnay and Cab.

Not long ago, a group of friends with deep roots in California’s Central Coast set out to create something special—Biddle Ranch. What began as a shared dream has since evolved into a labor of love, taking their families on a remarkable journey into the world of winemaking.

At its heart, Biddle Ranch is about the simple pleasure of enjoying exceptional wine in a stunning setting with cherished company. Every day, they strive to bring that feeling to life in their tasting room. With the skilled hands of winemaker Ryan Deovlet guiding the process from grape to glass, and the next generation taking the helm, Biddle Ranch is proud of what they’ve accomplished and excited to share it.

Visitors are invited to experience the beauty of their varietals firsthand. At Biddle Ranch, they promise a warm welcome and a feeling of home.

Sabina Vineyards

ABOUT US In 2002, David and Susan Sabin established Sabina Vineyards which they named in honor of David’s mother, Sabina Sabin who was the Matriarch of the family. After spending most of their adult lives in Chicago where they raised three, now-grown, children, David and Susan moved to Napa Valley. Together they have created a winery estate based on the small, family-owned Burgundian properties they have visited over years of travel to famous winegrowing regions. Their primary focus is the production of world-class Cabernet Sauvignon, and they have made a devoted commitment to organic farming.

Stopped by in the Fall to do a little tasting on our way up to the hot springs. I first went to this winery about 13 years ago and was a member for years. They have excellent red wines and fun harvest parties - complete with grape stomping! It's a quaint winery away from the crowds in Napa and couple of my favorites were the 2003 Cabernet Bosche and Zinfandel.
