The Marshall family has deep roots in the Sanger area, tracing their history back to the early 1900s when Hugh M. Marshall purchased 160 acres northeast of Sanger, where the family continues to farm today. Wine lovers who enjoy visiting wineries can appreciate the diverse agricultural legacy of the Marshalls, who have cultivated various crops over the decades, including figs, wheat, table and raisin grapes, plums, and nectarines, before ultimately focusing on wine grapes.

The Marshalls have always been hands-on in the processing of their crops, a commitment that led Hugh M. Marshall Jr. to establish the packing operation H. M. Marshall & Son in 1954, specializing in growing, packing, and shipping tree fruit and various types of grapes.

In the early 1980s, the family resumed shipping wine grapes to the East Coast for home winemaking. Hugh’s son began his journey in the wine grape business by accompanying his father on vineyard inspections, purchasing grapes, and preparing them for shipment. While attending Fresno State, he took on a full-time role in the business, picking, packing, and shipping grapes from those same vineyards.

As his interest in wine and winemaking grew, he began to craft wines from the grapes they had been cultivating for years. Initial attempts were rough, but encouragement from his wife, Jenifer, led him to submit his wines to various state and county fair competitions. His wines soon garnered numerous awards, including gold, silver, and bronze ribbons. Each recognition, as well as setbacks, spurred him to improve his craft. He enhanced his knowledge by taking classes from the UC Davis Extension Enology department and attending seminars at Fresno State and Sonoma State.

In 2012, after years of encouragement from family and friends, Hugh and Jenifer launched their own wine label, Maréchal Vineyards. For them, raising their family in a place with such rich agricultural heritage is vital, and they hope wine lovers will join them in celebrating yet another chapter of their family’s adventure in winemaking.

Robinson Family Vineyards

After retiring from the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1967, Norman (Bud) Robinson and his wife Helen (Dinky) Robinson acquired 78 acres in Napa Valley. Encouraged by friends and neighbors, including wine-industry pioneers Nathan Fay and Father Tom Turnbull, who recognized the site's great potential, they decided to shift their focus from horses and cattle to viticulture. In 1970, they planted the first grapes on the property, and with the establishment of the Home Winemaker's Association, Robinson Family Vineyards was born.

Over the years, Bud’s dedication to cultivating high-quality fruit for world-class wines became the foundation of the family’s legacy. When the estate was passed to their daughter Susie Robinson Jinks in 1998, along with her husband Tom Jinks, they embraced a similar lifestyle as her parents: managing the family estate full-time, dealing with the challenges of hands-on work, and overseeing the operational aspects of the vineyard and winery. Susie and Tom instilled these values in their three daughters—Carrie, Kim, and Robin—who also contribute to the winery’s operations. The hope is that someday, the next generation, including the eight grandchildren, will continue the legacy begun by Bud 50 years ago.

The Team

Susie Robinson Jinks spent her early childhood moving around due to her father Bud’s military career, living in places like Japan, Bolivia, Texas, Oklahoma, and Washington. When Bud retired to Napa Valley, Susie joined him in working the vineyard and winery. Tom Jinks, a Napa Valley native, started assisting in the vineyard during high school while dating Susie, and they married in 1971. Both Susie and Tom had successful careers—Susie in real estate and Tom as a contractor—before transitioning to full-time management of the vineyard and winery. Today, Tom serves as the winemaker, vineyard worker, cellarmaster, and resident storyteller, while Susie handles the roles of CEO, CFO, and human resources director.

Carrie Robinson Francoeur
Carrie, the eldest of Tom and Susie’s three daughters, graduated from California Polytechnic University with a degree in Agricultural Business. She manages daily office operations, including hosting tours and tastings, managing events, overseeing the RFV wine club, and assisting in harvest, winemaking, and production. Outside of the vineyard, Carrie is actively involved in her sons’ sports activities and enjoys golfing, glamping, and traveling.

Kim Jinks-Whipple and Robin Jinks-Yates
The twins, Kim and Robin, both graduated from Chico State University with degrees in Physical Education. Kim, who has two children (including the only girl among Susie and Tom’s eight grandchildren), and Robin, the mother of three boys, contribute to the winery by assisting with tastings, events, harvest, and production.

he Smeding family has a four generation history of working in agriculture in the Napa Valley. It all started in the 1920’s when Lettie’s Scandinavian grandparents Ivar and Saima Asplund came to the Napa Valley, purchased land, and began farming. The Smeding family has long had a love of horses. They all ride Quarter Horses and Arabians on trail and when working their cattle. Current vintages can be tasted and purchased at Napa Wine Company. Costa De Oro Winery

Costa de Oro Winery's mission is to craft the finest wines from the Central Coast by blending the artistry of Old-World winemaking with New-World grape growing practices.

In 1989, Ron Burk and Bob Espinola, owners of Gold Coast Farms, planted the Gold Coast Vineyard. This 30-acre vineyard, featuring Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes, is situated on a stunning bluff at Fuglar's Point in the esteemed Santa Maria Valley AVA of Santa Barbara County.

The vineyard began yielding fruit in the early 1990s, with grapes sold to local wineries including Au Bon Climat, Foxen, Lane Tanner, and The Hitching Post. During this period, Gary Burk, Ron Burk's son, formed a friendship with Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat. In 1994, Clendenen offered Gary a harvest position at the renowned Au Bon Climat/Qupé Winery, where Gary eventually accepted a full-time role and remained until 2002.

While at Au Bon Climat/Qupé in 1994, Gary produced the first Costa de Oro wines—one barrel each of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Costa de Oro continued to expand each year, reaching 2,500 cases by 2002, when Gary chose to dedicate himself entirely to the winery. Today, Costa de Oro produces 6,500 cases annually and also creates special private labels for clients such as James Beard Award Winner Roy Yamaguchi of Roy’s Restaurants, the Halekulani Hotel on Waikiki Beach, and CF Pinot Noir for Master Sommelier Chuck Furuya of the Sansei Restaurant Group.

The Costa de Oro Tasting Room opened in 2006 at the original location of the Gold Coast Farms' strawberry stand off the 101 Freeway in Santa Maria. Gary and his wife, Teresa Gasca-Burk, manage the tasting room, where visitors can enjoy local live music on weekends. Occasionally, they can even be seen performing with the bands. Guests are invited to savor wine, music, and the relaxed ambiance at Costa de Oro.

Fun, unassuming tasting room. The service was really friendly and I got the impression that the "$10 for 5" tasting is rarely a sticking point. Meaning, they poured my group additional samples and even asked me which one I wanted to try one last time as I was paying. Never with the feeling I was being pressured to buy anything, far from it. Ample picnic area in the back. BYO whatever and enjoy the scenery and play a game of bocce ball in one of their 2 courts. This is a perfect stop on your way to the beach or when heading back home.

Allora Vineyards

Allora Vineyards was established in 1999. The proprietors of Allora Vineyards are Terry and Nancy Klein. They manage their winemaking business along with their children, Kelly, Cortney, and Christopher Klein. Presently, 10 acres of grapevines are planted on the Klein's estate. Eight acres are Cabernet Sauvignon vines, and the remaining two acres consist of Cabernet Franc and Petite Sirah. Additionally, the vineyard employs a unique planting style in which vines are grown closely together, forcing each plant to produce only a small amount of fruit of the highest quality possible. Allora had its first harvest in the fall of 2002 and has been producing exceptional wine with each new vintage. You can visit Allora but remember that tastings are by appointment only and during the summer you will likely have to book a couple of months in advance.

Fieldbrook Valley Winery

Over the past 30 years, Fieldbrook Valley Winery has grown from a garage based operation to an efficient facility with separaate production and storage areas. Although Fieldbrook's equipment is capable of producing greater volumes of wine, Fieldbrook Valley limits production to less than 2000 cases a year. Their goal is to emphasize regional diversity and varietal intensity.

Over the years, they have produced a wide range of varietals, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Zinfandel, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, and Chardonnay.
