Scarecrow

Scarecrow Caberent Sauvignon does not have a long, fabled history like many of the most expensive California wines. In fact, they are one of the few recent cult wine phenomena to have taken off over the past few years. That says a lot about Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon and its popularity with wine lovers as the Cult wine craze has largely fallen by the way side. Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon made their debut California wine in 2003. While the winery is new, the vineyard has a long history dating all the way back to the end of World War 2. That was the year that John Daniel, Jr, (the original owner of the vineyards now used by Dominus,) convinced his friend J. Cohn, to plant 80 acres of Cabernet Sauvignon. Those vines became the backbone of all the legendary vintages for Inglenook that Cohn helped produce.
Scarecrow wine, Caberent Sauvignon is the brain child of Cohn’s grandson, Bret Lopez and Celia Masyczek. The best fruit comes from their oldest vines in the Rutherford vineyards. This small production wine is difficult to find and expensive. But it is a unique, tactile style of California Cabernet Sauvignon that is worth the effort to seek out. The entire production of Scarecrow Cabernet Sauvignon is sold through a mailing list.

School House Vineyard

John and Mancy now offer 4 wines:
Chardonnay
Pinot noir
Zinfandel Mescalanza (a blend)
Syrah Mescalanza ( a blend )

All 4 are great. You will be tasting at their house, by appointment only. It is a wonderful intimate experience. The Pinot is amazing.

Schrader Cellars

Schrader Cellars produces an ultra-premium portfolio of wines from single vineyard estate vineyards from the Napa Valley, Sonoma County, and Red Hills Lake County appellations. Schrader Cellars offers their wines exclusively via our mailing list and at the finest restaurants and wine shops in the United States, Europe, and Japan.

Schramsberg Vineyards

Cave tours are not created equal. This one is fantastic, despite being a tad pricey. Rich in history and rooted with tradition, it's almost hard to believe that Schramsberg sparkling wines are relatively easy to come by at gourmet grocers outside of California (Central Market in TX carries 4 bottles of sparkling varietals).

The property is beautiful, and not your 'typical' pretty manor situated among a valley of vines. A short drive up the slightly windy road rewards you with a lush estate nestled in trees, flanked by the caves, and with several ponds to complete the tranquil atmosphere.

Schweiger Vineyards

2500 ft up the mountain from the "flatlands" of St. Helena. Very different feel from the wineries down on the valley floor. Small family owned and operated winery. We did not get a tour but had a very pleasant tasting.

Screaming Eagle Winery & Vineyards

The most sought after California CultWine in the World!

This small operation is located just below the Dalla Valle vineyard near the Oakville Cross. Screaming Eagle's Cabernet Sauvignons are going to create quite a stir among lovers of that varietal - if they are able to latch onto a bottle or two. The estate is owned by Tony Bowden and Jean Phillips, one of Napa Valley's leading real estate agents. With the help of Heidi Barrett and Gustav Dalla Valle, this operation's debut vintage is the extraordinary 1992 Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the greatest young Cabernets I have ever tasted. The wine is bottled unfined and unfiltered, and aged in 60% new oak.

Segway Napa

Segway Napa
We started tour off around the graveyard/Veterans area in Yountville. Gale the tour operator gives you lots of history about the area, wineries, etc...A great way to learn about the area and the rich history of the region.

Next we glided down various back roads in the beautiful countryside surrounding Yountville. Gale gave us more wonderful historical tidbits and was quite knowledgeable about local plants, trees, wineries, etc.

Then we hit Goosecross Cellars for a very relaxed winetasting and were treated to some fantastic wines. We ended up buying three different bottles and had lots of room to carry them back with us in the pack-sacks that are attached to the Segway's. The people at Goosecross were great and I will write up a separate review for them. After the tasting we sat out back next to the vineyards drinking wine and eating some great cheese and crackers that gale brought with her - lots of great conversation about the region and her time working at various wineries.

Selene Wines

Then there is Mia Klein. Owner of Selene Wines. With a long long history Consulting for Several Big Name wineries like Araujo, Bressler, Spottswoode, Viader, and Fisher. Selene is her personal Label. Mia makes several beautiful wines. Merlot, Cabernet, Rose and a Bordeaux blend, but to me its that "Beautiful - Crisp - Clean" Selene Sauvignon Blanc that I can never ever forget. I have always said the I lean more towards Sauv. Blanc's and several other Varietals over Chardonnay. Her expression of Sauvignon Blanc shows the lime, lemon and pineapple notes that I have come to love from this varietal.
Selene's first vintage was the 1991 Napa Valley Merlot, followed by the 1992 Hyde Vineyards Sauvignon Blanc. Both were released in 1993. The addition of a Cabernet Sauvignon and ‘Chesler’ (a Cabernet Franc based Red Wine) began with the 2002 vintage.
Currently, the wines are made at the Laird Family Estate, a Napa custom crush facility that specializes in servicing the wine making needs of micro wineries like Selene.

Sequoia Grove Vineyards

The staff was great and wines are amazing. Vicky was very warm and welcoming. We went on a Friday evening it was busy but still attentive to our needs. One of the bigger wineries, open to the public, that gets a lot of foot traffic. But heck, the wines are great! so no complaining. Some really unique blends mixed in with the more traditional. Their at the vineyard only Gewurztraminer was heaven and the Ridiculous Red plus some good Cabs and solid Sauvignon Blanc.

Sequum Wines

With the 2001 harvest Paul launched his Sequum brand and released his first vintage of Napa Valley Zinfandel from his 2 acre Kidd Ranch vineyard in St. Helena. In 2002, he added a Cabernet Sauvignon from four specially selected Napa vineyard soils and named it Four Soil Melange. In 2003, the first release of the most recent addition to the Sequum portfolio, a Sonoma Dry Creek Zinfandel called Riverwash, was announced. He plans to add a vineyard designated Kidd Ranch Syrah and Kidd Ranch Cabernet Sauvignon with the 2006 vintage.

Paul continues to consult for vineyards up and down the west coast and enjoys fine tuning the production of his Sequum wines.
