Shafer Vineyards

It is a little difficult getting a reservation for a tasting -- they only do 2 groups of ten a day. They spend a lot of time with you and provide a lot of great information about the winery.

The poured 5 wines, including a 93 Hillside and a 95 Merlot. The pours were very generous and the wines were wonderful. Staff certainly knows what they are talking about and as friendly as could be -- no pressure to buy -- and availability somewhat limited.

Sherwin Family Vineyards

Steve and Linda Sherwin yearned for a quieter, more relaxed setting to raise their three children. A series of weekend visits to the Napa Valley in 1996 finally uncovered a thirty acre property near the top of Spring Mountain. The property featured a beautiful home and a serene lake but the real prize was the three acres of mixed old vine Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. These three acres are in the same location that was originally part of a 500 acre estate producing sought-after grapes in the late 1800's through Prohibition.

With a a successful career in construction development behind him and a true hands-on approach, Steve began clearing and planting vineyards around the three original acres virtually by himself. He planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Merlot and finished thirteen acres later. The new acreage is actually broken up into three vineyards named after the children: Jenny, Lindsey and Matthew.
I had heard it was one of the most beautiful settings to taste wine and we were not disappointed. The tasting room is very relaxed and comfy. I felt like Donna had invited us into her luxury rustic open area kitchen. We sipped our first glass inside and moved out to the patio. We all agreed the weather couldn't have been more beautiful. A perfect day for a perfect taste.

Shibumi Knoll Vineyards

Many years ago Don Ross read a book, Shibumi, which became one of his favorites. Adventure, intrigue, romance, the book has it all. Most importantly, the book introduced Don to the concept of Shibumi, a Japanese word describing a physical and emotional state which most nearly translates to “effortless perfection”, “understated elegance”, or “perfect peace”. Life on Don's little knoll which is surrounded by vineyards, canopied by majestic oaks and blessed with bucolic 360° views is truly one of Shibumi. Hence when Mr. Don Ross decided to make wine under his own label, “Shibumi Knoll Vineyards” seemed appropriate.

Showket Vineyard

Peter Michael, a leading Sonoma County winery, is expanding into Napa. The Knights Valley producer has purchased the Showket Oakville Vineyard, a 41-acre property including a residence and 26 acres of vineyards.

Shypoke Winery

I found this place several years ago and at the time, they only made two wines a rare Charbono and my favorite Sangiovese. Since those days they have now added a Cab to their line up. These wines are very small production and hard to find. The Charbono is a deep ruby red wine with intense complex flavors I think it needs to be decanted for a few hours to get the best of it.

The Sangiovese is just lovely, well balanced and goes great with a bowl of pasta or nice steak.

The whole operation is a great family story and they are most welcoming.
The Shypoke story starts back in 1904, with a fellow named Michael Heitz. Michael was an immigrant from the Alsace region of Germany (now part of France). Arriving in America with his wife, Louise, they started looking for a place to settle down and raise their growing family. In 1904 they found Calistoga and took an interest in a 50-acre parcel just south of town. They situated their home at the base of a wooded hill near a small spring-fed creek, and set about clearing some of the valley floor.

Signorello Vineyards

Great place to visit if you plan to do some wine tasting in the Napa Valley.

Silver Stag Winery

Silver Stag Winery sits on a prime piece of Tulocay acreage in the heart of Napa Valley, just east of the town of Napa and about three miles from the Bay. Planted in plums back at the end of the nineteenth century, the soil is rich enough—and distinct enough—to have earned it consideration as an official viticultural appellation. The vineyard is defined by a gentle swale that sits at the foot of Mount George. Its microclimate, comparable to "cool Bordeaux", is a bit warmer than Carneros, but it still feels the marine intrusions flowing up the path of the Napa River. The effect is to extend the time on the vine, yielding smaller berries with less tannin and far more concentration than the Napa average. Silver Stag has planted the majority of its land in Cabernet Sauvignon, with some Cab Franc and Petit Verdot. Visits by appointment.

Silverado Vineyards

This is a scenic winery with nice views and good wine. You can almost miss the road up the hill to the winery - as the winery is set on the hill.
Nice wine sampling - Go for a wine tasting; be sure to soak in the view.
