The scenery is great, there is outdoor seating for a picnic and a fabulous bottle of wine to accompany it. Beautiful tasting room and a wonderful selection of wines. If you like white wine you are in for a treat with the viognier, sauvignon blanc and chardonnay. On the red side they have tempranillo, barbera, syrah, mourvedre and zin.
More than a few small wineries have started in a garage, but we may be the only Winery to begin that way, move on to bigger and better quarters, and still be in a garage. Founded in 1980 in a small garage on the outskirts of town, in 1982 the Winery moved to its present location, the historic Miners Foundry Garage, on Spring St in downtown Nevada City. Remarkably, the Winery is located less than two blocks from where the original Nevada City Winery stood over a century ago.
The Winery was begun by Allan Haley, a Nevada County native with a European wine education and a dream of bringing winemaking back to our region. In 1880 there were over 300 acres of grapes in the County. In 1980 when the Winery opened there was one small vineyard, recently planted. Twenty years later there are again well over 300 acres of grapes and the wine industry is flourishing once more.

The tasting room that I like to visit. There is nothing touristy about it - it is simple and understated. And the wine? So good! A great little find. A campy tasting room that includes the aroma of wine laden wooden barrels ended up with some of the most aged wines.
We go down the road less traveled. We appeal to wine drinkers that wish to explore the joys of Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier, Malbec, Petite Sirah, Carmine, Petit Verdot, Alicante Bouschet, Tempranillo, Graciano, Souzao, Touriga National, Grenace, Mourvedre, Montepulciano, Barbera, Dolcetto, or Corvina as blends or varietal wines.
Why Rhônes? Because they are an alternative to the beaten path. Because they are delicious as well as different. And because they are so perfectly suited to the Santa Ynez Valley, the sun-drenched, fog-kissed place that Curtis Winery calls home.
Don't overlook this small store and location. This is a great spot to go with friends for a FREE Olive oil tasting. The owner is passionate about his wines and olive oil and will take the time to talk about his passion. When you first walk in you will see a typical wine tasting area (with a wine tasting fee). Bypass that area and go toward the back right corner by the restroom. Here the owner will offer you a free olive oil and vinegar tasting using small pieces of dipping bread! These specialty oil and vinegars are reasonably priced and make great gifts. Then head back to the tasting bar.
Rancho Ventavo Cellars - In early 2005 Faye decided that her husband George Filpatrick I needed another job as his time wasn’t being completely used all 24 hours of the day – between his full time day job and working our 40 acre avocado & lemon ranch. So, during and shortly after a trip to the Russian River area the couple made the decision to turn their passion for wine making into a commercial endeavor. The agreement was George would make the wines and Faye would sell it. Since the couple had always called their ranch "Rancho Ventavo", an avocado and lemon ranch located on Ventavo Drive, it only seemed fitting to call the winery "Rancho Ventavo Cellars". While the winery is not open to the public you can taste the wines that the Filpatrick's produce in their tasting room in Oxnard, CA. *

Tablas Creek bottles are widely distributed and easy to find in wine stores, I don't always visit their tasting room. Not only can I often find better deals at wine shops, but I have a fairly good idea what wines of theirs I prefer so a tasting isn't extremely helpful. But, I can't resist and it helps that they increased the size of the tasting menu. It also helps that they will pour and sell wines not on the typical tasting run-down and not typically found in stores.
