In the heart of Rutherford, Quintessa spans 280 acres and showcases a remarkable diversity of geology, biodiversity, exposures, and microclimates. Founders Agustin and Valeria Huneeus envisioned this unique property as a potential world-class wine estate. Currently, 160 acres are dedicated to the cultivation of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère across 26 vineyard blocks. Each block is farmed organically and according to Biodynamic® principles, with grapes harvested and vinified separately to highlight the land's distinct characteristics.

Depending on the vintage, Quintessa's offerings may include some or all of the estate's five varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère. The grapes are harvested early in the morning, sorted, and then gravity-fed into oak, stainless steel, or concrete tanks for fermentation. Following fermentation and maceration, each plot’s wine is aged separately for up to two years in French oak barrels. After blending, the final Quintessa wine is bottled and aged for an additional year before release.
What really made the experience magical was the overall layout and view of the place. The wine tasting counter/bar is backdropped by an amazing window that overlooks the vineyards. The wine tasting room itself is on a hill overlooking the vineyards, so all you see out the window is a sloping valley of gorgeous grape vines.
The Room, not to be confused with their Estate a few minutes away, is super modern. This is where you want to go if you want a quick stop. If you want to tour/cave experience, take the extra time to go to the estate. If you're your timing is right, you may even get to pipette from the barrel! The rich history of California agriculture and winemaking is evident everywhere. This is a Famly business run by four Brothers, all native residents of Napa, and all grew up making wine in their garage as kids.... Needless to say they produce some outstanding wine! The brothers take turns conducting private tours at a cave winery in the southeastern hills of the Napa Valley. It's a great tour and a REAL Napa Winemaking experience.
It all started back in 1988 when Eric’s parents purchased the land where the winery and vineyard sit today. Eric was still attending Cal Poly earning his BS in Ecology and Systematic Biology at the time but helped his dad by designing and planting the vineyard. After getting the vineyard planted and producing, Eric began to expand his wine knowledge. Biologist as his day job, Eric went back to school, attending UC Davis’s enology extension courses. Eventually, landing his first wine job with Ken Volk at Wild Horse Winery in Templeton and then moving into a position with Kendal-Jackson Winery. Eventually in 1998, Eric made the first official vintage of Zenaida Cellars and has been working on developing the wines ever since.
